Synopsis - Netiquette
Netiquette
As a mother and an educator I am very aware of the concerns of uploading photos and information on children onto the Net.
Other areas of extreme caution are when a child uses the Net as a Social Network. There are many predators in the world wide web and it is advisable to be aware of who your child is chatting to.
In a school situation, Net Alert, is a cybersafe area which guides teachers about safety using the net in schools. Children and staff do need to have passwords for security.
Plagiarism
As a University student I am aware of having permission to use images and referencing material I use on the internet. There are rules to abide by, for example; the 10% paper based copying rule which allows you to use parts of documents but care needs to be taken.
Exploitation
Using Facebook and other public sites, blogs included, care needs to be taken not exploit others or yourself by using photographs, videos or words which may be perceived by others as impolite or unprofessional.
Synopsis - Connectivism and Constructivist Theories evident
I found setting up a Wiki, (mfdcscience.wikispaces.com) to be a useful task. The wiki was very helpful when practicing the Quizz for Assessment 1. I participated in the Mobile Phone exercise. I have also been into the Science lecturers wiki several times.
I consider a Wiki a Constructivist type of learning whereby you learn socially when sharing your opinion and research on the site. Explicit examples were offered on the Wiki's for the learners to use and learn from. Students could upload shared research for others to use. There were many benefits for learning. Scaffolding and collaborating helped to build on my knowledge using these sites.
Connectivism's learning theory was also evident. Lecturers have set up wiki's to be used by students. The high standard of presentation of the wiki encourages the student to participate at a higher level.
Wiki's will be very useful for my students of Mudjimba Family Day Care to do science, sose and art assignments in School Age Care. I am looking forward to utilising this Wiki.
Synopsis - TPACK and Blooms Taxonomy
TPACK is an invaluable framework to ensure that the Learning Manager compbines pedagogy and content with the ability to bring in Technology, not only knowing the content and knowledge but how to teach children so that they can keep learning about the new technologies. Technology changes constantly, and a teacher needs to be able to adapt with this. The Learning Manager needs to understand that teaching technology is ever changing, requiring a flexible approach to keep investigating and learning about the new things available. This is another area of teaching that the teacher needs to step outside the box, this digital immigrant has lots to learn yet.
This has been a very well taught subject. I have been challenged to step outside my comfort zone, to find out how to use new tools. I am grateful for the help I have received at University from students, lecturers, staff and also from my family to complete this subject. People are very generous with their time. I have definitely achieved higher order thinking.
Synopsis - De Bono, TPACK, Blooms Taxonomy
I have entered into the De Bono Six Thinking Hats Wiki on the Moodle sight.
I used the black hat examining the difficulties and problems associated with the use of mobile phones in the classroom.
I also used the blue hat to focus on reflection and to organise the thinking.
As a student, I was able to use an IPAD in the lecture last night to make a movie. This was enjoyable and engaging. Reflecting about my enjoyment made me think about my father who now has an IPAD but doesn't know how to use it properly yet. My 13 year old daughter has a laptop and an IPOD. She uses Facebook for social media. I now understand the importance of these tools for my 13 year old daughter. I would not like her to feel as alienated as my dad does about these tools.
I don't think my daughter needs the expense of a mobile phone or the distraction of one in the classroom. Children need to be taught the etiquitte and value of this tool first.
I would consider buying an IPAD for my daughter and my family day care business as I really love what they can do. Mobiles aren't needed by children in the classroom. Mobile phones are a distraction. There are many other great tools for the classroom as was evident in our lecture last night. There was no mention of the mobile phone in the lecture.
I like the TPACK framework. It helps me to value the knowledge frameworks involved in ICT ie: the Technological , Pedagogical and Content Knowledge frameworks. It helps me realise that the use of technology is a higher order thinking reached by a natural engagement in the child. Whereas my fathers generation treats it with fear. Therefore by following the TPACK framework, the Learning Manager can be more confident that they will be a competant teacher who know the content and how to teach it.
I look at Blooms Taxonomy and I realise the importance of learning technology so that we reach higher levels of thinking as I am doing in this blog. Well presented digital pedagogy is going to contribute to knowing what your learners know, how they learn, and what their learning styles are. If the Learning Manager knows how to teach ICT, they will feel confident that learners will learn in todays changing world.
Synopsis - PMI
I was cautioned by another student when trying to transfer graphs to a blog, this would be tricky, and so it is.
PMI Blogs to be used by students in classroom
Plus Minus Interesting
Can’t be used in schools
Others can read it, possible bullying, predators I think it is best for children to have less exposure to the negative side of the internet so this is best, The Learning Place will have the best blogging tools for schools
Great collaborative tool Have to learn how to invite people to your blog This was very helpful to me, as other students were able to give support
Learn from others It was great seeing others work so that it made me raise the bar
Get help I was helped by other students and a lecturer, this kept me going, thank you
Can link to other sites This offers many more learning opportunities and makes the site interesting and offers networking
Makes you think about being professional when you know the world could see it Very easy to write how you feel without thinking professionally All the comments go to the web, care is needed here,
Makes you accountable when you know that others can see it I now realise how exposed blogs are to the world, needs to be kept professional.
You are able to edit what you write This is comforting that you can change what you have written but once the recipients have received it you can’t take it back, so would you need to edit it immediately or is it too late once it is published.
No one else can edit your work
Synopsis - Where to find the tools
Another tricky transfer - I have some more research to do on blogs so that I can present them professionally.

Synopsis - Prensky, Sensory Resister, Chunking
As a Learning Manager, I find myself frustrated by the amount of time required to become fluent in the language of digital technology. Prensky (2001) says that today's learners responds well to a changed style of digital pedagogy. These digital natives, no longer require step by step instructions. They require teachers that can direct them how to create the technology. UNESCO (Moodle, 2012) is a worldwide organisation that has set a framework for teacher competency in ICT. Technology in education, is not going to disappear, it must be confronted.
Learning theory also needs to be addressed by the Learning Manager. To present education professionally and with creditability is paramount to teaching. Comparing the brain to a computer, the Sensory Register also filters incomprehensible amounts of information before transferring it to the working memory. Students need to believe that information is important. The digital natives are capable of chunking information (Cooper, 1998) so well that research is showing evidence of brain transformation (Prensky, 2001).

two days to go, internet really slow at home, ohh
14/8/12 My internet slows down since having other people in my house using the wireless connection, we will be changing over to unlimited internet access shortly. 4 weeks ago I tried to use Internet cafe at McDonalds and the Maroochy Library but found it unsuccessful.
16/8/12 This time I came up to the University for the day to use the internet and this was successful
I have been here between lectures also but often dont get a lot done in shorter times
I need to change the domain name, will have to do a weebley instead, shame because I spent a lot of time uploading information onto this

Hi Lyn, I have received your invitation to your lynbourke29 wiki but it wont let me have access. I probably need to be approved by you. Not sure how. Hope you are getting lots done. Thank you for always helping me, you will be a wonderful teacher. from Robbie. PS your blog and wiki look great, you have been doing lots of work. Well done.
I cautioned myself about taking on 3 subjects, a new business, dealing with centrelink for the first time and just dealing with life in general. I went ahead with MEL not really knowing if I would get it all done. I have spent a lot of time trying to do things that frustrate me. I considered dropping out before the deadline but discovered that the centrelink that I had just spent many hours applying for requires me to be studying full time so with help from admin I continued with the subject.
These are the reflective diary notes I have made since:
Week 1 was good.
I was advised that I had to go on Centrelink during the 2nd week when I had 2 days at Uni, 2 x 10 hour days of work at my school (Vacation Care), 1 full day with children in my new Family Day Care business plus nights work establishing our accounts system (Harmony Light) and doing enrollment interviews. My time for study was 2 days on the weekend and nights. I felt very distracted and then low and behold on the 3rd week I had no internet for 5 days, this created the thoughts of dropping out of MEL.
Week 6 catch up has helped.
17/7/2012
Thanks to the student who cautioned me about dropping back because of centrelink Austudy and thank you to Admin for your help. Admins support gave me a boost to keep going with this subject. I know I do have to keep learning ICT if I want to work in Education.
18/7/2012
Spent a couple of hours at Uni doing by blogger and Voki, go some help from other students, feel a bit better about it all.
21/7/2012
I have done bits and pieces of MEL so far but had to get life organised in the end. I really just have to divide what time I have up between the 3 subjects.
24/7/2012
My business is still settling in and Austudy has only just been finalised, now I hope to concentrate on my uni. I have resigned from my 2nd part time job. Erin and Larissa made a time to collaborate about the quizzes which got be catching up on that tonight. I feel very unprepared. Still have to do a science investigating and my Dad is in for his op tomorrow. If it doesn't rain it pours. Have orthodontic problem with teeth at present, have to go to dentist soon.
1/8/2012
3 hours at uni spent trying to connect to internet, need to speak with IT next time I am up there. Changed to the Uni computer, but it wouldnt allow me in to edit my blog. I tried wordle. I had help from Sharon and Lyn. We tried putting it in paint. Then into the web, highlight, save in computer, back into paint, paste in paint. I would not do it, nor would Lyn's. It's now time to go and I have reverted to writing this. I am really a digital immigrant, but I have learnt a lot in the last 10 years. I remember it was about 2003 and I did'nt know how to send an email. As for anything else, all I could do was try to search the internet and write a letter.
If I had a lot more time I would be better at this.
30/8/2012
My stepson showed me how to download a Youtube converter. I was so grateful. However after a while I realised that extra add on's appeared and lights were flashing on my tool bar about speed dating. My computer also seemed to be clogged and was slow. So after some hours I was able to uninstall and rid of all the new tools. Oh what a nightmare.
2/8/2012
When I went to collaborate about the quizz with Larissa and Erin and Lyn, I discovered that I had a complete mental block and could not even read the questions, what is this called. What I did learn was to see how two very capable young girls collaborated together and handle technology as if it was an exciting new car they were driving. I went home and looked at the quizz practices again and the next time I was much more able to contribute to the collaboration.
9/8/2012
My 13 year old daughter is a great photographer. She went to the trouble of putting 200 of her beautiful photos of the Sunshine Coast, Hinchinbrook Island and Lady Elliot Island on a USB for me to put on Tag Galaxy. I have spent several hours trying to do this and have had to say 'STOP' to myself, 'spend no more time on it, get on with your other assignments'.
10/8/2012
Well its been good having a week off uni to get my assignments done and reflect on MEL. Hopefully I will be able to do some moodle activities for MEL through the week.

I would like to list all that I have done, because I feel like I have not accomplished a lot, except frustration. I would appreciate advise on what else I need to do to pass this subject.

- I have started up this blog: mudjimbafamilydaycare.blog
- I have said hello on moodle group wiki
- I have printed out the list of everyones blog address
- I have invited 7 people to follow me
- I have commented on students using mobile phones in the classroom
- I have done the 'hats' exercise
- I have now embedded a wordle, we found doing them at uni didnt work but was possible at home. I collaborated with 2 students and finally my lecturer was able to help
- I have now embedded Youtube vidoes, (HTML, Compose, Save and Publish) successfully, this was exciting. I did download a converter for my science assignment which turned out to be a disaster when I went to submit my assignment, I havent had time to try the science teachers good sites she told us about but I am happy that I can embed them into my blog.
- I did the practice tests on moodle a few times and listened to the podcast
- I have collaborated to do my quizzes with 4 other uni students over 2 sessions and found this successful
- I have reflected in my notes which I will type out and put on the blog
- I have signed up for flickr and tried 3 times to download my 13 year old 200 photos to put on tag galaxy but it kept saying I have used up too much room so I am sorry but I have to drag myself away from this, I would love to do it but its just taken so much time
- First of all I embedde a voki with Shelley's help I have since done another one and need to embed it yet. I sent it to my old work place to thank them.
- I have discovered the magic of Youtube and how it helps you do things
- I have set up a web site http://robbiekeating.wix.com/mfdc but need to change the website name to www.mudjimbafamilydaycare.com, have not been able to achieve this. I even paid to keep the name for 12 months which was a mistake.
- I am still developing my knowledge/understanding and have started to apply some of it, maybe doing this is Evaluating (I could be experiencing HIGHER ORDER THINKING) in MEL so according to Blooms Taxonomy I am moving up.
- I did enjoy reading Prensky's theory and must say I really do have to start using this technology properly, it is just going to take time, the challenge of this subject is wonderful, if it didn't cost so much I would do the subject again. I do hope to pass and wouldn't it be good to form a club supporting each other to learn technology. If only there were more hours in the day.
- I have been using powerpoint for assignments and with time and patience I am learning how to use its features
- I have also set up a facebook site, but now need to delete photos from it if anyone knows how to do this

Hi Robbie,
One of the things you can do in a wordle is add a whole website - you do this by adding the url (which is the address so to speak) and wordle will capture all the text on the website for you which saves you copying it.
What you probably want to do is type or paste some text in to make your word cloud. You do this in the top box when you go to http://www.wordle.net/create
Then click go. Let us know how you go... or better still post your word cloud on this blog for us all to see.

Hi, the power of collaboration is very important. I have struggling to get back into to mode of study, new business in toe as well as other distractions. Meeting up with 3 other students to look at quizzes tomorrow has got me studying hard tonight so I will be able to contribute. Thanks Lyn, Larissa and Erin and now Sharon
Inreply to Jacqui's email 9/8/12
For the quizz, I found collaboration excellent, it made me accountable to prepare myself to do the quizz,
it also allowed me to do extra preparation mentally that I needed to do so that I could work in a group and offer something of value. I also must say that if it wasn't for other people sometimes you may not get through because they help to push you beyond your own self belief, so i want to say thanks for collaboration.
